Same-day junk removal in NYC, New Jersey and Philadelphia

What's the Difference Between Junk Removal and Hoarding Cleanup?

Both jobs end with a truck full of stuff driving away, so it's easy to assume they're the same service. They aren't. The crew, the pace, the sorting and the price all work differently, and booking the wrong one can cost you a missed deadline or a second visit. Here's how to tell which one you actually need.

The short answer

Junk removal is for items you've already decided to get rid of: a couch, an old fridge, a garage full of boxes you know are going. The crew shows up, loads what you point at, and leaves. Most jobs take an hour or two.

Hoarding cleanup is for a space where the amount of stuff has made the home hard or unsafe to use, and where some of what's inside still matters. The crew sorts as it goes, sets aside documents and valuables, works through the space room by room, and often has to meet a deadline someone else set. Jobs usually take a full day or more.

Five practical differences

1. Who decides what goes

With junk removal, you decide before we arrive. With hoarding cleanup, many of those decisions happen during the job. The crew flags anything that might be important, like paperwork, photos, cash, jewelry or medication, and either sets it aside or checks with the family before it leaves the building.

2. Crew size and time on site

A typical junk pickup is two people and one truck. A hoarding cleanout might be three to five people, more than one truckload, and one to three days depending on the size of the home and how hard it is to move through.

3. How it's priced

Both are priced by volume, meaning how much truck space the job fills, not by the hour. Standard junk removal follows a published truck-load price list. Hoarding jobs are quoted individually from photos because volume, access and sorting time vary so much. Most of our hoarding cleanouts land between $800 and $2,500, with severe whole-house cases costing more.

4. Deadlines

Junk removal is usually on your schedule. Hoarding cleanups usually aren't: an HPD or code inspection, a hospital discharge date, a lease turnover or a closing date sets the clock. That's why our emergency hoarding cleanup service runs same-day and next-day crews, including weekends.

5. Discretion

Nobody worries about the neighbors seeing a couch go into a truck. For hoarding cleanups, many families prefer unmarked trucks and a crew that doesn't discuss the job with anyone. We do both on request.

Signs you need hoarding cleanup, not junk removal

  • Walkways, exits or the kitchen and bathroom are blocked or hard to use.
  • You don't know everything that's in the space, and some of it may be important.
  • There's spoiled food, bagged trash or broken furniture mixed in with belongings.
  • An inspector, landlord, hospital, court or realtor has given you a date.
  • The person who lives there wants a say in what stays.

If none of those apply, standard junk removal services are probably the faster and cheaper choice.

What neither service covers

Neither junk removal nor hoarding cleanup includes biohazard remediation. Heavy animal waste, serious mold, or anything that needs certified trauma cleaning is a separate, licensed trade. We'll tell you honestly if that's what you're facing, and we can work alongside a remediation company when needed. For more detail, see what a hoarding cleanup company actually does.

Still not sure? Send photos.

You don't have to figure it out alone. Text or upload a few photos and tell us your deadline. We'll tell you which service fits, give you a firm price, and let you know how soon we can start.
